Every week as more members join Partner League, we reflect back at how grateful we are to have such a vibrant community of Shopify Partners from across the globe.
Over time, we have come together to speak all about the changing eCommerce landscape and the Shopify ecosystem. In fact, some of the best ideas have been discussed, shared and brainstormed upon in this community.
So we decided it was time to start getting some of our members into the spotlight for their active contribution towards everything we learn together. We know, you already know this from our Member Spotlights series.
This time, we had a chance to speak with Lisa Popovici, the Founder at Cartloop, a conversational SMS marketing app for Shopify brands. She's a Med School graduate turned to tech, an entrepreneur with over 6 years of eCommerce experience, now changing the landscape of SMS marketing by helping brands be good to their customers.
Hey Lisa, great to have you be part of Partner League’s Member Spotlight. Can you give us some details on your background, and what first got you interested in helping Shopify merchants and being a Shopify partner?
I'm a Med Student graduate turned to tech. I studied medicine for 6 years, while working on my eCommerce brands as a side-gig, learning everything on my own and with the help of my co-founder. eCommerce hooked me and I remember I was so eager to get back from classes just to work on my stores. The 5th year was a turning point for me as I realized where my true passion was.
After traveling to San Francisco in 2018, my co-founder and I, decided to start a SaaS company that would solve one of our biggest issues that we were facing within our businesses - and that was not relying on external marketing channels.
After trials and errors, and a pivot, Cartloop was born. After only months from launching, we raised our first round of funding and won an international startup competition. Growth has been amazing and we're super excited for what's next.
That’s always fascinating to hear the stories when side-passion is transforming into something much bigger and eventually becomes main and actual business. Could you tell us a little about your app and how you came up with the idea? What was the problem you noticed that you wanted to solve for Shopify merchants?
Coming from an eCommerce background, I've been through all the ups and downs that merchants go through. One of the downs was relying on external marketing channels such as paid advertising. This was one reason we decided to look into other ways we could own our audience and build sustainable growth.
Second reason why Cartloop was born came when my co-founder and I used to get a lot of abandoned carts. And they were really frustrating. We wanted to find out the reason behind them. So we started texting our abandoned shoppers via WhatsApp. We approached them in a very friendly way and tried to make them to come back. What we found is that they were very open to talking about it and we managed to recover a bunch of them.
Last year we saw the huge opportunity that the SMS marketing space had to offer and the goldmine that is yet untapped. And we saw the conversational gap in the market. This is how Cartloop came to life!
Problems that we solve:
Let’s touch a bit on partnership topic. Can you share a specific collaboration project you’ve worked on with other Shopify Partners? How did it happen, what was the hypothesis, how was the experience, what was the outcome?
We had a bunch of co-marketing projects with Shopify agencies such as Velstar (https://velstar.co.uk/conversational-vs-automated-sms-marketing/) where the goal was to educate their audience on the difference between conversational and automated SMS marketing. Another example is our biggest project which is Cartloop Rewards - a directory of perks and exclusive deals worth over $20,000 in value from Cartloop tech partners created uniquely for Cartloop merchants to help them run and grow their brands. Some of the partner apps included are Gorgias, Skubana, ShipBob, Loox or Aftership. (https://www.cartloop.io/rewards)
Can you highlight a valuable connection made within Partner League, a resource or pivotal insight that you learned from being a member?
Constantly learning from the community. I met some great people during the past months. One example would be learning about a new customer interviews framework from Monica Sharma-Patnekar, eCommerce Business & Brand Mentor.
Which other professional online communities are you part of and most engaged in? Free or paid. If communities have had an important impact on your business or role within the business, can you explain how?
What are the top 3 tools (digital or physical) you use, and can’t live without, to help you as an entrepreneur?
What are you working on now to help your business get to the next level?
Scaling the company - bringing the right people into the right seats.
